I just had the pipes off, the casting on my Ace looks like your picture.
yes, the flange has been overtightened sometime its lifetime...

Are you hearing a loud TICKING coming from the exhaust pipe to head union ? It will sound like a marble bounceing off concrete at idle, and
the TICKING will speed up as the throttle is rolled in. That would indicate a exhaust leak.

Sounds more like a fuel delivery problem, with not getting upto speed.
Try turning the fuel petcock valve on the tank when its running, see if there is any difference in running.
When the engine is running, use your other key and release the gas cap...is there a "woosh" sound ? If so check the little vent hose at the rear of the tank, make sure its not pinched.

Check your battery posts for being tight, too. I've seen alot of strange happenings from battery posts loosening...it can happen suddenly too.

It looks like the studs out of the engine are bent. Is that the case, or is it just the flang on the pipes?

Zero.

That divit or break in the casting is normal. If you take a real good look at it you will notice it's not actually broken. Notice their is paint their if it was broken it wouln'd have factory paint on it you would actually see bare metal. What i'm getting at is that it come's factory like that.

If you removed the sidecover to get clear access to the rear pipe nuts, the gastank vent line runs from the tank to a clip behind the side cover; the vent hose could be pinched by the sidecover. The gastank would get pressureized and would cause similar symptoms that you discribed. The hot weather would help the gastank become pressurized, too; if it isn't venting properly.
If there isn't a exhaust leak, I wouldn't bother removing the pipes.

I just looked at my engine too and that cut out is normal. It had me fooled as it looks like a piece thats broken off (just too circular).

I still think you have a fuel problem. It may be the vent line like mentioned above or one of the things I mentioned earlier.

was an eventful afternoon. The local honda place has the service dept. open til 4 so figured to try and bring it in. Gave me hell starting but had to stop to put gas in. Didn't want to start back up, but luckily, it was only about 3/4 to 1 mile from my apt. so I pushed the bike up onto the sidewalk and freaking walked the bike home.....it was only 100+ out. Got back to teh apt. and had to rest for about 3 hours do to me shaking so badly......

Went to look at he bike a bit ago and didn't even turn over, so pulled the seat and pulled the battery. I don't have a charger and never charged the battery since I've owned it in Nov. A friend has a battery tester and tested it and the battery is dead. I went to walmart and picked up a charger. Got the battery charging now. Hope to put the battery back in tomorrow, and might have been as simple as the battery neding a charge?????????

Will update tomorrow, sinc eI have a feeling it'll be to late and to dark once the battery is done charging, to put it in tonight and start it up. It sucks living in apts.

AZ, I know what you mean about pushin! I ran out of gas 1/2 mile from a filling station and although I was pushing on the flat...my heart was pounding and eyeballs on stems by the time I got to the pump! It took me near an hour and a tall lemonade to recover! Laughing

I suggest you get one of those newer battery chargers for bikes that not only charges but holds the charge without overcharging...they run about $30 US and are well worth it. It will desulfur the plates with time and give the battery new life. Do you know if yours is the original battery? My bike is an 02 and still has the stock battery. But most of the time when it is home, it stays on the charger, just to squeak out as much life as possible! Batteries are expensive for bikes, the stock Honda one here runs over $100 from the dealer and I still have to put it in! I am looking at buying the equivalent from other than Honda when the time comes...should be able to pick it up for around $75....I hope!

picked up a speedcharger/maintainer for $20 at walmart. Battery was replaced sometime last year when my cousin's husband got the bike and had work done on it to try and get it running.

Yeah, I went to pepboys and a 14BS battery there is $70 and it's $75 at walmart. Batteries are a bit diffrent then car batteries, cause both these are basically just the shell and come with the acid that you have to install yourself.

I ride my bike every day to work sinc eI got it running and go my licesnse, so sometime back in Feb. I believe. The hospital we are doing work at is only about a mile away but then after work or weekends, when I don't have the boys I usually go out for a few hours riding, and didn't really ever think about charging the battery, lol...

hopefully the charge and then reinstalling the exhaust will be enough to get it running good, dunno....

welp, charger just finished up so went and put the battery back in teh bike...........guess what......... started right up on very first touch of the ignition Very Happy

Took it for a spin, and thing runs like a raped ape now Very Happy

While that was charging, when it cooled down a bit I went out and cleaned out the fuel filter (was clean Very Happy ) and also checked all the wiring and tubing that was visible.

Seems to run a lot better as well, seems like I get a bit more out of the motor now between shifts and accelerates faster, or so it seems.

I still have to rebolt the exhaust up though, although I did check and it's not leaking and both pipes are hot, but still want to redo it jsut for piece of mind.

Only took it for about a 5 mile spin but seemed like a hole new bike Very Happy

AZ, good see you got your ACE going again. Good job.

I have friends in Arizona, they are changing batteries in their
cars+bikes, more often than I do up here in MN. The dry heat
you get in AZ really eats away at them.

welp, it cooled down to only 102 out so jsut went to take the bike for another ride. Did start right up but sounded/felt like it's struggling for either fuel or spark. Had to constantly feather the throttle to keep it from dying. Guess lastnight I was probably on the gas hard and didn't notice.

Anyways, got back and as I was backing it into a spot under the awning at the apt. complex parking lot it died out on me. I touched both exhaust pipes and the front 1 was hot as hell while the back one was hot, but was able to touch and not isntantly pull my hand away.

Think I will go to Liberty Motorsports when they open Tuesday (they are closed Sundays and Mondays) and probably order that honda spark plug tool and order 4 new spark plugs.

With the plugs, what is the recommended gap on them? I don't have a book and in all honesty with the IRS starting to pull money out this month towards what I owe em, I can't even afford to do the spark plugs, but by darnit, that bike is my way of keeping sane, and I don't care if it is 115 out Very Happy lol

Recommended Spark Plugs...

NGK - DPR9EA 9
Denso - X27EPR-U9

Those are the 'hot' plugs. I'd reecommend them over the standard or cold ones as you are in a high temp environment.

The gap is 0.80 - 0.90 mm (0.031" - 0.035")
